Graston® Technique
Graston is an effective instrument-assisted soft-tissue therapy for pain reduction and increased range-of-motion and function.
What is Graston Technique?
Graston Technique® (GT) is an instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization technique that effectively treats acute, chronic, and/or post-surgical soft tissue conditions. GT utilizes specifically designed stainless steel instruments with unique edges and angles, along with cross fiber massage to identify, stretch, and break up areas of scar tissue and fascial restriction, restoring pain free movement and function. Graston Technique has been used as a protocol for more than 25 years, the concept is grounded in the works of Dr. James Cyriax, a British Orthopedic Surgeon.
Evidence Shows GT Provides the Following Physiological Effects:
Why is Scar Tissue a Problem?
Scar tissue forms when the body heals from repetitive trauma or an injury. When tissue is damaged, it will often heal in a fibrotic, haphazard manner. Unlike normal tissue, scar tissue shows thickening, irregular organization, and lacks elasticity causing restriction, limited range of motion, functional limitations, weakness, pain and discomfort. It can also result in adhesions, impaired blood flow, nerve entrapment, and muscle tension.
Is Graston Treatment Painful?
You may experience some minimal discomfort during your first few sessions with mild bruising. This is a normal response to the healing process.
What is the Frequency of Treatment?
Patients usually receive two treatments per week over the course of 4 to 5 weeks. Most patients see results by the 3rd or 4th session.
