Active Release Technique®

What is Active Release Technique (ART)?

Active Release Technique, referred to as ART, is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often the result of overused or misused tissues.

The goal of ART is to restore optimal texture, motion and function of the soft tissue and release any entrapped nerves or blood vessels. This is accomplished through the removal of adhesions or fibrosis in the soft tissue via the application of the specific protocols. Adhesions can occur as a result of an acute injury, repetitive motion, and constant pressure or tension. ART eliminates the pain and dysfunction associated with these adhesions.

What is an ART treatment like?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his hand to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. The abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension along with very specific patient movements.

Active Release Technique, as the name implies, uses motion to fix the problem. Again, once the injury has been assessed, the provider uses hands-on treatment while guiding the patient through specific ranges of motion to "free up" the problems areas.

Treatment duration and frequency may vary depending on the severity and complexity of the injury. However, most patients experience rapid recovery.

Can any provider perform ART?

Only a credentialed ART provider can ascertain whether Active Release Technique might prove to be beneficial treatment for your condition.

Dr. Dennis J. King is one of the very few providers in our area that is credentialed with Elite Provider Status for ART, as he has completed all three of the available courses specializing in Upper Extremity, Spine, and Lower Extremity. Dr. King stays current on all the new protocols and research relating to Active Release Technique by using this method of treatment on a daily basis as well as attending multiple seminars and training courses annually.

Can ART help me?

What we hear most is, "I have had this pain for a long time, and up until now, no one has been able to find the cause. You found the source of the problem right away."

This is because no one is trained to palpate these specific conditions like an ART provider. Seeing an ART provider is like seeing a soft tissue and nerve specialist all in one. Until now, no such specialist existed.

Since an ART provider is qualified to diagnose and treat over 400 structures, we see a broad range of injuries and conditions.

ART is successful for professional and amateur athletes, people injured in auto accidents or at work, and people who just work hard...and hurt. Symptoms vary from aches and pains, to burning muscles, to numbness and tingling.
